One of the most popular centaur / human to centaur transformation stores, is Jack L. Chalker's, Midnight at the Well of Souls. Origionally published by Del Ray press in July of 1977, it is one of the most read books by centaur fans.
In this book, a young woman, Wuju Lee, has been taken captive, forcably addicted to some very powerful drug, and made by her captors to do acts that are better left unsaid. She is rescued by the 'good guys', but along the way are mysteriously transported far away to the Well World. Once there, they find that the world is comprised of many different forms of life, and must go through a 'gate' that they will exit someplace else, as something else.
Wuju Lee comes out the other side and finds herself with no memory of her captivity, but free of her forced addiction, in good health, and... a centaur. As the story has the members of the cast separated and having to meet, we follow all of them through their adventures, including Wuju who has to adapt not only to her loss of memory, but her centaur form.
Reprinted in April, of 2002, many fans with old beat up copies of the book were happy to get a brand new copy. As a nice addition, the 2002 printing has new cover art by Clyde Caldwell, well known fantasy illustrator. Mr Caldwell was gracious enough to allow the posting of his painting for the second printing of Midnight at the Well of Souls, along with some nice pen and ink sketches he did as proposals for the cover.
